MEQ- Speeding Winchmore Hill Road

Response details: Dear Cllr Stephanos Ioannou,

Thank you for your enquiry.

I note the report of high speeds on Winchmore Hill Road. Enforcement of speed limits falls to the police, and residents can contact them about the possibility of a Community Roadwatch operation for such streets. Community Roadwatch aims to reduce speeding in residential areas and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local Police teams, using speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities.

To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, members of the public can contact CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk stating the borough where they live. Enquiries are forwarded to the relevant local MPS Safer Transport Team, who will be in touch.

The public can also report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behaviour directly to the Police via their online reporting tool, RoadSafe London. Every report helps the Police to understand where and when bad road user behaviour takes place, enabling resources to be targeted accordingly.

In terms of the Council placing traffic calming on Winchmore Hill Road, this is not a likely short-term prospect. The need to accommodate buses restricts the options available. More fundamentally, the Council only has access to modest funding for standalone casualty reduction measures. Accordingly it continues to prioritise those streets that attract the most road user injuries. Breaking the borough network down into its 156 busiest sections of street, Winchmore Hill Road does not fall inside the top 100 in terms of the number of road user injuries. While this may offer some reassurance to its residents, it does mean that speed and casualty reduction measures are unlikely to be introduced here in the coming years.
