We are currently investigating the background to the placement of this gate and I will report back to you shortly, as soon as we have established all of the facts.

Workmen are currently installing a large gate on the path down the side of Asda between Chase Side and the Southgate Chase Allotment site to block pedestrian access.

I have spoken to various personnel in Asda ( but not the manager) and have been given various responses
– the gate will remain open during store opening areas -the gate will be closed 24/7
– it has been approved during a meeting with council representatives
– it is to stop people taking trolleys off site

I know some of my neighbours have been trying to get hold of the store manager and Head Office with no success.

This is a re-sited public footpath which was changed to this location when Asda was built at the end of the 80s.

This footpath is well used. Please investigate the legality of this action by Asda, Southgate.

    Maybe there are other reasons.. If Asdas was sold off then maybe more land for developers for housing.. also it is a right of way which is being used regularly by residents etc..

    Hi. Anyone know who put the lock on the second gate near the flats? (Grey gates)

      I believe that ASDA installed the gate, the issue is now with planning and we are seeking an anwser and possibly enforcement.

        Hi Stephanos,

        I know about the green gate that Asda put up, luckily it’s not locked.

        I’m talking about the gate further down that goes towards the flats in Picard close. It seems a code lock has been added on so you can no longer go down that path, which is safer as there are lights.

        This is going to force people to use the allotment alley which is not safe at night.

        Surely it is a Right of Way for the public.. correct me if I am wrong but if it has been used as a public footpath for a number of years, surely it cannot be blocked !

        The gate near the flats is private property and land belongs to estate and they have installed to stop the ASB , and due to too much of drug peddling, prostitution and ASB and particular thefts , they have closed it and it is a private estate, so they kept gates and restricted access and on to their site , only residents in that estate can have access.

        We believe same reason Asda had the gates but if is a footpath for leading into allotments it is a subject for/to council to comeback.

    What difference does closing that gate make? How will it stop prostitution and drug peddling?

    Any behaviour of such is no longer into estate as they have stopped the public usage and abusing their land where they are incurring lot of costs on their maintenance and safety, Ie protecting the estate ambience and their living and their families, it is a private development and last time when checked they had all needed permissions in place it seems and they are with in their rights to closeit.
