MEQ- Green Space- Southgate Station

Response details:

Dear Cllr Stephanos Ioannou,

Thank you for bringing to our attention the issues regarding the green space adjacent to Southgate Station. This space has been designed as a Pocket Park to provide a more pleasant and accessible environment for local people, building on the collaborative planting efforts that took place with the community last November.

We appreciate that the grass and planting may currently appear patchy in places. This can often happen as new plants bed in, particularly after colder months or dry spells. To further enhance the space, our landscaping contractor returned in late April to add additional plants, helping to enrich and complement the original planting. These improvements are part of our longer-term approach to regenerating and greening public spaces across the borough. The contractor is responsible for maintaining the newly planted areas as part of their ongoing duties, and we will be working closely with them to ensure that the space remains in good condition.

Given the Pocket Parks proximity to the station, it does attract high footfall. While Transport for London is responsible for the regular cleaning of the site, from May onwards the Councils Street Cleansing team will supplement this by carrying out additional cleaning to help keep the space welcoming and safe for everyone who uses it.

We will continue monitoring the situation and remain committed to supporting its ongoing improvement so that it continues to serve the needs of the local community.

Kind regards,
Communications Officer

Original enquiry description:

Hi

I walked through the bit of rough ground next to Southgate tube with the hideous blue log benches. Despite the laughably grandiose statements on the signs, it has been left full of weeds and totally untended. I have attached some photos to show the state of it Can you ask the council what they have planned and why they bothered if they had no funds to or intention of maintaining it? Yet again Southgate looks like a down beat forgotten land!

Many thanks
Can I please ask the department why the new space already looks neglected please? The grass is patchy and almost dead
