I refer to your recent enquiry on behalf of your constituent regarding their concerns about the speed of vehicles on Chase Road.
I have spoken with the police regarding the collision mentioned in your constituent’s correspondence and it is unlikely that traffic calming or safety cameras would have prevented this collision from occurring.
As part of the Council’s commitment to help deliver the Mayor’s Vision Zero, we have developed a prioritisation tool to help ensure that our limited resources are focussed on road safety schemes likely to deliver the greatest safety benefits. At the moment Chase Road have not been identified as an immediate priority.
I will arrange for a speed survey to determine the level of compliance with the speed limit. Should the results of the survey show significant levels of non-compliance we will share this information with the police for their consideration of appropriate enforcement action. This survey will be undertaken when the schools return after the summer break.
As an alternative, you constituents may want to contact the Police about the possibility of a Community Roadwatch operation for Chase Road. Community Roadwatch aims to reduce speeding in residential areas and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local Police teams, using speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities.
To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, members of the public can contact CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk stating the borough where they live. Enquiries are forwarded to the relevant local MPS Safer Transport Team, who will be in touch.
The public can also report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behaviour directly to the Police via their online reporting tool, RoadSafe London. Every report helps the Police to understand where and when bad road user behaviour takes place, enabling resources to be targeted accordingly.
I hope the above answers your enquiry, should you wish to discuss any of the points made above do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely
Andy Ruffell
