MEQ- Visibility and pedestrian safety at the New Avenue housing development

Response details:

Dear Cllr Stephanos Ioannou,

Thank you for your enquiry concerning visibility and pedestrian safety at the New Avenue housing development on Avenue Road.

We appreciate how important it is for people to feel safe and comfortable when crossing the road. From your constituents description, it sounds like the mature planting between the pavement and the road may be making it harder for drivers to see people waiting to cross. Our team will visit the site in the coming days to observe the issues described.

That said, we believe the current location of the crossing has been chosen carefully. Because its on a dip in the road, it can actually help make pedestrians more visible to drivers approaching from either direction. The crossing also helps connect the new homes with nearby bus stops and has been designed to shorten the distance people need to cross, which helps to slow traffic too.

Longer term, the Council will look to explore additional ways to calm traffic along Avenue Road. We hope to do this using contributions from the developer.

Thank you again for raising this issue with us.

Kind regards,

Original enquiry description:
I would like to bring your attention to the danger posed by the housing development New Avenue on Avenue Road. It has a large flowerbed between the road and the pavement, now filled with mature bushes and shrubs. These plants completely obscure pedestrians trying to cross the road. As a car driver it is impossible to see pedestrians waiting at the dropped kerb until you are directly opposite them.

The development is situated in a dip in the road which makes visibility even worse. Cars also tend to speed up as they go down the hill, reaching peak speed right at the opening of the development.

I do think someone at LB Enfield should take a look at this and see how safety can be improved, before there is a serious accident.

Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards
