MEQ- Parking Ticket Data – Enfiled, Southgate

This article is in response to concerns from residents that the number of parking tickets being issued in Southgate in the London Borough of Enfield is not up to a decent standard. Following the Freedom of Information requests that I  made from the parking department at Enfield Council, I too agree, and I believe that residents will also agree that traffic wardens are either not living up to expectations and are not enforcing as vigorously as they should. The statistics tell a story that the parking wardens in the borough are not ticketing as much on the key roads that are notorious in our borough for parking violations.

Particularly I am shocked that on Ashfield Parade we are looking an average of 40 tickets per month.  I am also shocked to see that on Chase side there are only 90 tickets being issued a month.

With the data that I have received, I will be speaking to the head of parking services at the local authority to see what precisely we can do to increase the amount of ticketing. Although this might not be a popular opinion and a popular stance to take, I maintain that Southgate has become like the Wild West and we do need to get a grip of parking, especially on the most notorious of roads. Particularly I will be asking:

  • Can the local authority dedicate more traffic wardens in addition to the current number of traffic wardens in place in Southgate ward?
  • Can the local authority dedicate more time slots for existing and additional traffic wardens in Southgate?
  • Can the local authority discuss with councillors about additional double yellow lines in Southgate to deter parking violations?
  • Can the local authority discuss with councillors about the ticketing of motorbikes, especially along chase side? That can be an increased revenue stream for the local authority?

    Don’t you think people are getting smarter and not carelessly parking their vehicles. I guess under the circumstances you are paying out more in wages than you are receiving.
    Also, as a councillor and representative of people within your constituent, should you not be in favour of people not being ticketed??

      Thank you for your comment, but you’re right, people are finding more ways to avoid being ticketed, but this is to the detriment of the local authority. People should park correctly. Currently in Southgate we have a situation where people are parking on the pavement and the double parking and are a danger for motorists and pedestrians. Like any person, I am in favour of people being ticketed when they are double parking. And when they are violating the highway. Everybody agrees that Southgate has become like the Wild West and we need to get a grip on it.

    Can the local authority get speed cameras put up on
    EVERSLEY PARK ROAD N21
    It should be a good source of income as it is very badly needed & a dangerous road for sure.

    Thank you for following up on the request at the Ward Forum.
    However, I note that Chase Road is not included, which is surprising given the parking issue at the Winchmore Hill end of the road. Could you query this omission.
    It leads to a consideration of how the roads included were selected.

    Thank you Stephanos – this is very much needed. Although I have no direct evidence I have been led to believe by others that the traffic wardens are physically threatened by some offenders when they attempt to ticket illegal parking. If this is indeed the case then the police surely need to take action.

    Emergency vehicle passage on Ashfield Parade is consistently impeded by vehicles illegally parked on double yellow lines and within the designated taxi rank. I propose the installation of a parking enforcement camera on Ashfield Parade, similar to the one monitoring the roundabout, to address this persistent issue.

      Hi Yianni,

      You cannot ticket from a camera anymore they got rid of this method many years back. You cannot give a parking ticket to a vehicle via CCTV. Already enquired. This is across London.

    The data highlights the relatively low number of tickets issued around Ashfield Parade and Chase Side (and nearby areas); I’d be very curious to know what kind of impact the large number of “dodgy looking” men who frequent the cafes & coffee bars around Southgate & Palmers Green has on the willingness of parking wardens to issue tickets. Is it possible that they feel too intimidated??
    Furthermore, the plague of delivery drivers’ scooters occupying the few parking spaces that are available must do little to help the situation….
    I’d love to hear your views on these points and what possible action/s might be taken going forward.

    I’m not intending to cause offence, and you do seem to care about the ward, but I had 5 tickets for a pool car that was in quarantine and the council vultures won’t take cctv evidence of the car not leaving the compound to rescind this.

    Coupled with the ignorant and selfish school run parents that feel it’s their God given right to park where they feel around Highlands, I wish you all the best in resolving this B/S.

    I totally agree with your comment about Southgate becoming like the Wild West. There is very little parking enforcement taking place. The area of
    Bramley Road Oakwood is exactly the same. On the small parade outside number 220 it is now normal to have to walk on the road to get around the vans and cars that are just parked up on the pavement. Most of these people are visiting the local “coffee / Men’s” shop. I have taken many photos of these vehicles and contacted Parking enforcement whilst being told to mind my own business. This pavement is also used by Southgate School children on a daily basis. More bollards need to be installed ASAP to stop this madness before someone gets hurt.
