MEQ- Temporary Traffic Lights- Winchmore Hill Road

Response details:

Note: The original enquiry does not mean I support those proposals. I am bound to make an enquiry for residents regardless. That is not necessarily an endorsement

Dear Cllr Stephanos Ioannou,

Thank you for your enquiry.

As part of the Councils commitment to help deliver the Mayors Vision Zero, we have developed a prioritisation tool to help ensure that our limited resources are focussed on road safety schemes likely to deliver the greatest safety benefits. At the moment Winchmore Hill Road has not been identified as an immediate priority.

Traffic signals are installed and maintained by Transport for London (TfL), the Council can request that TfL assess a location for traffic signals suitability, however there are considerable costs associated with the design and installation of traffic signals. Generally, they are typically introduced at major junctions or as part of a large scheme as a standalone pedestrian crossing.

Kind regards,

Original enquiry description:

From February 28th to March 9th, 10 days there was temporary traffic lights at the Winchmore Hill Road meets St Thomas Road, as Thames water were here to do digging for sewer or drain work. They completely closed St Thomas Road. The traffic light worked well. Traffic was slower and safer speeds. THAT is my concern. Unsafe speeding and pollution. If they could the council could look into the potential to a traffic light system either further on near Aldridge Walk and also closing St Thomas Road completely to slow traffic. So I thought I would give you some proposals first one, close St Thomas Road and have a permanent two-way traffic light to reduce speeding and safety or close St Thomas Road and add new traffic lights where it’s close to Aldridge walk.
